The Pinterest Trends Tool shows you what people on Pinterest are searching for in a particular region throughout the year.

Trends can be identified specifically to topics, like Art, Design, and Home Décor for example. Plus, age and gender are considered, further homing in on your target audience’s searches. Searches can even be narrowed down to specific keywords in your niche or creative discipline.

The Pinterest Trends Tool is a guide to creating and posting Pins that are relevant to your audience at the time they are on Pinterest looking for what you offer.

Pinners are planners.

The Trends Tool will help you choose the most timely keywords to use in your Pin Titles and Pin Descriptions today so that your Pins will appear in searches when your audience is looking for the content you are Pinning.

How To Find the Pinterest Trends Tool

The Pinterest Trends Tool operates on two pages within the Pinterest platform. First, log on to your Pinterest account.

Here are the two ways to access the Trends Tool:

1 Directly from your browser’s search bar at trends.pinterest.com

2 From the Pinterest Nav bar, select Trends in the dropdown under Analytics

No matter which option you choose, you’ll land on the first page of the Trends Tool, as shown below.

As you can see this page has 1. a search bar, 2. a section with top trends in your selected region, and a 3. discovery center.  Choose the region from the dropdown located to the right of the search bar.

Similar to the search bar on other pages of the Pinterest platform, once you enter a keyword a dropdown will appear with trending keyword phrases but with a trending graph beside it, as shown.

After clicking enter, the second page of the Pinterest Trends tool will appear, below:

We’ll come back to review the second page more closely in section 3, below. Right now, let’s look at the benefits of using the first page of the Trends Tool.

The Trends Tool has two pages.

How To Use the First Page of The Pinterest Trends Tool

Working your way down the page under the search bar (and the regional dropdown) you’ll find 1. Top Trends for the Month (for the selected region). Don’t let the fact that ‘Nails’ seems to be the most popular searched term on Pinterest because there are plenty of valuable insights for many niches, especially Art, which is a highly searched topic.

  • If you see a section called Trends matching your Pins, skip below where this is talked about. Otherwise, carry on.

Next, find 2. Discover trends in the United States (or preferred region)

Right away you’ll notice a goldmine of keywords to explore. In fact, each of the keywords is hyperlinked to a larger graph that shows the interest in that keyword over time. Again, we’ll explore this graph in Section 3.

Next, we take a closer look at the 3. Trends Tool Filters.

A Closer Look At the Trends Tool Filters Section

The Trend type section is particularly valuable as it shows you when your Pins are most likely to be searched. There are four Trend types in the dropdown, each exposing keywords that have high search volumes for that period, depending upon the End date selected.

Four Trend Types

1 – Top monthly trends show results for the last 30 days

2 – Top yearly trends show results for the last 365 days

3 – Growing trends show results for the last 90 days

4 – Seasonal trends show results for the last 30 days that reoccur during the same period year over year.

By observing the robust outpouring of keywords and examining the changes per week, month, or year, you can assess which relevant keywords are the best to use. For example, modest changes are likely associated with trends that are consistent year over year for that time period. While huge changes may be a result of seasonality.

As you work your way down the left side of the Discover Trends section, you’ll be able to hone in on keywords that relate to the Interests associated with your niche, specific niche-related keywords, age, and gender. Go ahead and explore each of the dropdown filters to see how far you can go!

* Trends Matching Your Pins

For some, you may see a different section right below the search bar, as shown below. This is likely to appear on accounts looking into ads, or running ads. We’re not diving into ads in this article.

Plan Content Ahead

From the first page of the Trends Tool, select a topic and enter it into the search bar. By clicking ‘enter’ the second page of the Trends Tool, as I call it, will appear showing a time graph.

The graph shows you how often people are searching for a keyword compared to all keyword searches that week, indexed from 0 to 100.

By selecting a specific period (3 months, 6 months, 1 year) and end date (top right of the graph) you can gauge when trends for your topic are more likely to be searched, based on historical data.

Timing is everything.

Research Keywords

Let’s take the topic ‘art’ for example.

Art, as an interest, has an index that ranges above 60 up to 100, with not a whole lot of dips throughout the year. Using the word ‘art’ throughout your Pin copy will help surface your Pins, albeit in a crowded search. By including secondary keyword phrases and niche words in your Pin copy you can increase the chances of your Pin being seen. Of course, as a visual search engine, the Pin’s image is a key component for standing out.

Another way to ensure your Pins are found is by having your business account optimized for search. Not sure what that looks like? Read Pinterest SEO Starts With These 7 Steps.

Now, let’s look at a more niche topic like ‘colorful abstract art’.

‘Colorful abstract art’ is a specific term and therefore not searched as often, see the graph below where the index surges and shrinks throughout the year. But, timed right, using niche terms in your Pin titles, descriptions, and text overlay will help your Pins rise to the top of the search. Timing is everything.

At the bottom of the graph, find Related trends. These are more keywords to consider, and compare, for use in your Pin making, so long as they are relevant to what you have to offer.

The goal here is to time the release of your content when the searches are climbing and at their highest for your target keywords and keyword phrases.

As you scroll down the page, you’ll understand the value of your topic across Demographics. Plus, you are provided with examples of Popular Pins, which are Pinterest’s way of saying “Hey, these Pins are popular, use them as inspiration to make your own.”

Remember, Pinners are planners

Users on Pinterest plan months ahead. The Tends Tool helps you to anticipate what Pinners will be searching for at a given time of year. Pins need to be scheduled ahead of time so they can be indexed, and understood by the algorithm, to show up when your target audience is searching for what you have to offer.

A successful Pin posting strategy means staying on top of trending topics and high-volume searches. The Pinterest Trends Tool is a terrific resource that will give you insight into what topics and keywords are resonating with Pinterest’s users. In turn, you are able to craft relevant Pins that rise to the top of searches for your target audience and that stay in circulation to be found again and again.
