How to Use “Pinterest Predicts” to Market Your Creative Business on Pinterest

Let’s take a look at how Pinterest Predicts can maximize your Pinterest marketing efforts with trending keyword searches. While we’re at it, we answer the question: “Is Pinterest Right for Your Business?”

Each year, Pinterest releases an annual Pinterest Predicts report to give you a sneak peek into the future. In essence, what Pinterest is predicting tomorrow can be incorporated into your marketing strategy today, all while remaining true and aligned with your brand messaging.

When I ask people around me if they’d ever marketed their business on Pinterest, invariably they say “Oh, I thought it was just for looking up recipes” or “Well, perhaps if I were an interior designer, it’s a great place to collect ideas for furniture and home decor”.

Well, yes…Pinterest is good for gathering inspiration and ideas, but it is also built for driving new eyes to your business.

Pinterest drives traffic to your website.

First, Pinterest is a visual search engine. It is not as community-oriented as you might experience on Instagram, for example. However Pinterest’s ever-evolving platform, like the introduction of IDEA Pins back in 2021, and the ability to comment and message, suggests that Pinterest is creating space for engagement.

As a visual discovery engine, Pinterest gives people a place to find the next great idea, “a one-stop-shop for inspiration, new products, and new possibilities.” source

Second, because people hop on to Pinterest to discover new ideas, products, and services, they want to see what you have to offer. Yes, you.

Who Uses Pinterest?

They are Pinners, they’re regularly on Pinterest creating and saving Pins. In fact, there are 482 million people using Pinterest each month.1

In 2021 the Pinner demographic was skewed to more than 70% women, but that’s quickly changing. At the time of this writing, according to Pinterest “women make up more than 60% of the global audience”. But, male Pinners and Gen Z Pinners are up 40% year-over-year.1 What’s more…

…Pinners are open-minded and undecided.

According to Pinterest, 97% of top Pinterest searches are unbranded. This means your business is on a level playing field with companies that may be better known. Pinterest goes on to say that 80% of weekly Pinners have discovered a new brand or product on their platform. This begs the question…

Why not give Pinners a chance to find your business, too, right?

Let’s look inside the Pinterest Predicts report to see how it can be used to market your business. If you’re just starting to strategize for 2024 the timing couldn’t be better.

Pinterest Predicts is a Look Into the Future

The Pinterest Predicts report anticipates what Pinners will be searching for down the road. In Pinterest’s words, “This is a not-yet-trending report–a window into the future”. By having a glimpse into where people’s behaviors are leaning, you can prepare a marketing plan that incorporates these insights to stay ahead of your competition.

How accurate is Pinterest Predicts?

According to Pinterest, the predictions made in 2021 continue to escalate. See them here. Even when the Pandemic entered the scene in 2020 Pinterest claims to have hit the mark with 80% of their predictions.*

Staying attuned to your customers’ desires by providing them with what they are looking for is imperative for success. Even though I still harbor a bit of the belief that “if you build it they will come”, fulfillment comes from shaping a business to be relevant and meaningful.

Knowing what people are looking for will increase those Pin click-throughs that lead to your website.

Examples of Predictions From Pinterest Predicts?

When you open the Pinterest Predicts report online you’re greeted with a vivid display of imagery and color! I have a huge fascination with color and how its energy can light up your world. But that’s a story for another time.😃

As you scroll through Pinterest Predicts you’ll find predictions named in fanciful metaphors and clever phrases making for a lively reading experience! Link to Pinterest Predicts online or to the downloadable version, here. While the examples I provide below were taken from previous years, their application to your marketing strategy is just the same.

“Curve Appeal” was the 2022 prediction that saud ‘arcs’ will be a new design theme, such as curved couches and curved kitchen islands. Looking at Pinterest Trends today “curved couch” is still a very popular search, see the image below:

How to Use Pinterest Predicts Trends

“Hot Horology” predicted that people were searching for clocks and watches more than ever. In fact, ‘watch collection display’ as a search term was up 65%. Say for example you are a jeweler making and selling watches, or pendants with clock imagery, hot horology suggests that by incorporating the keywords watch collection into your Pin descriptions your Pins are bound to be found.

Remember, keywording on Pinterest is crucial for SEO. Take a look at my blog “How to Use Keywords on Pinterest” to learn more.

My favorite prediction was “Don’t quit your yay job”! The idea is that you can make a living doing what you love. Hello! I am evidence of this. I have taken my love of painting and Pinteresting and built a business, Frieda Creates. If you have a passion, Pinterest suggested that it was a great time to build a new business. Let’s see what they say for 2024.

Along with each prediction listed in the report, Pinterest provides further details of what Pinners are searching for. For example, the prediction of “Don’t quit your yay job” shows that people are looking for art business ideas which are up 75%, plus:

  • Party rental business ideas are up 95% and
  • Becoming a realtor searches are up 135%

How to Incorporate a Prediction Into Your Marketing

The report goes on to show how you can incorporate their predictions into your marketing, no matter what business you’re in. Here’s an example pulled from the report:

If you’re a finance brand, and if people are searching for ideas to turn their hobbies into extra cash, then you can provide them with budgeting tips, accounting software, and investment products to help them open for business.”

The report also provides examples of whether you’re a home brand or a tech brand. The point is, that you can adapt your Pinterest marketing to fit the needs of your customers without compromising what your business is about.

Have You Wondered “Is Pinterest Right For My Business?

If so, take a deeper dive into Pinterest Predicts to see what’s coming up in searches related to your business.

The report also provides a dedicated Pinterest board for each prediction loaded with related Pins. For example, the “Don’t quit your yay job” board is populated with Pins on ‘How to make more money as an artist‘ and ‘An artist’s guide to starting a side hustle on a budget’. These Pins serve as inspiration for creating your own marketing strategy, too.

Pinterest is a place to be inspired and still stay true to your company values and who you are.

More than ever, marketing strategies today are successful when you stay true to yourself. You’ve probably heard ‘authentic’ used a million times in marketing strategies. But it works. Being who you are is what resonates with others across our social worlds.

Pinterest Predicts also offers an option to filter their predictions by ‘audience’ or ‘category’. Using categories as an example, here are some that are included in Pinterest Predicts 2022:

Auto, Beauty, Celebrations, Fashion, Finance, Food and Beverage, Hobbies and Interests, Home, Parenting, Pets, Tech, Travel, Wellbeing

If your business fits into one of these categories you can feel confident it’s time to market your business on Pinterest.

If you don’t see your exact category, like the Arts, you may need to dig deeper. Say you’re a jeweler looking at the category ‘Hobbies and Interests’ as an example.

When you select this category you’ll find “Hellenistic Revival” where Ancient Greek jewelry is up in searches by 120%. Is it out of your realm to consider a Greek design for one of your pendants or rings? Or better, consider displaying your jewelry on a figure from that period and creating Pins using keywords related to Ancient Greece. This doesn’t mean you have to change your individuality as a jeweler, but it does offer up the chance to finesse your marketing in order to be found on Pinterest, and thus all of your designs become discovered.

How Pinterest Predicts Works

By incorporating Pinterest’s trends and predictions into your marketing strategies and using the keywords that people are searching, you are sure to entice traffic from a new audience to your business, opening them up to all that you do.

Pinterest empowers you to make sound marketing decisions, whatever your passion.

When it comes to marketing your business Pinterest is a great place to be. Having an understanding of what people are looking for gives you invaluable insights. My hunch is that Pinterest is right for your business, too.
